on women. more than a quarter of a million, 280,000 women, have served in iraq, afghanistan, or neighboring countries in support of those two wars. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. today's announcement overturns a 1994 ban on women serving in battlefront operations and it opens up about 230,000 military jobs that until now were closed to women. the new pentagon policy makes women eligible to serve in army and marine infantry units. there's also the potential for them to be part of an elite operations team like the navy s.e.a.l.s and other forces. >> working side by side with special forces teams with pretty cool. >> but in order to join women

must be able to withstand the rigid strength requirements with those units. >> there are jobs women can't do physically because they don't have the physical strength to do it. >> the pentagon is opening the door to more women being killed or wounded in action. conflicts have cost more than 130 women their lives and more than 800 have been wounded. dawn halfacre lost her arm fighting alongside an infantry unit. >> there's not a big difference at all. a lot of the things we did we did with infantry units. we were all fighting the same fight, doing the same thing. >> this is the executive director of the women's active network. she's a former marine captain. she says frontline jobs will mean more advancement to women

officers. >> we refer to the glass ceiling when women can't get beyond the point of fro gregs. in the military we call it the brass creeling. >> it was recommended by the joint chiefs of staff but the changes will not be immediate. some of these jobs for these women will open up this year but the different branchs of the military have until 2016 to make their case that some of these jobs should remain closed to women. overseas north korea says it's ready to carry out another nuclear test and more long-range. the target? the united states. north korean leaders say the tests are designed to strike and attack the united states, referring to america, as its sworn enemy. the next north korean nuclear test would be its third and could come as early as next month.

the senate judicial committee holds hearings this month. today senator dianne feinstein takes on one of the most contentious gun ban issues. nancy cortes reports. >> reporter: this is seen by many democrats as the first step in strengthening gun laws but it's also the most controversial. it's called the assaults weapons ban of 2013 and it would reinstate the assault weapons ban that was allowed to last in 2004. it would also restrict the number of bullets in high-capacity magazines. this is legislation that has been waiting in the wings for quite some time, but the lead sponsor, senator dianne feinstein of california is introducing it now in the wake of the sandy hook tragedy. most republicans and some democrats argue that an assaults weapons ban is ineffective, that it doesn't do much for gun

violence, doesn't deal with the real problem of violence and violates the second aechlt but the democrats by and large contend that studies show that the assault weapons bandit work when it was in place and that they plan to deal with things like mental illness and background checks in future legislation. nancy cortes, cbs news, capitol hill. also on capitol hill, the debt ceiling crisis appears to have been averted, at least for now. a bill suspending the debt limit is headed to the senate. the house passed the measure yesterday. it allows the treasury to exceed its borrowing limit through may 18th and the president says he'll sign the legislation. secretary of state hillary clinton returns to capitol hill today. she'll introduce senator john kerry tapped to take her place. yesterday clinton spent more than 5 1/2 hours testifying before congress about the siege of the u.s. consulate in libya. she faced tough aggressive

questions about the attacks which left four americans dead. margaret brennan reports. >> as i have said many times, i take responsibility. >> reporter: in her opening statement, the usually reserved hillary clinton said that for her the benghazi tragedy is personal. >> i stood next to president obama as the marines carried those flag draped caskets off the plane at andrews. i put my arms around the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughter, and the wives left alone to raise their children. >> reporter: secretary clinton said while she had a close relationship with ambassador stevens his request for additional security never made it to her desk. >> the specific security requests pertaining to benghazi, you know, were handled by the security professionals in the department. i didn't see those requests. they didn't come to me. i didn't approve them. i didn't deny them. >> reporter: still republican

senator rand paul said she should be held account snoobl had i been president at the time and i found that you did not read the cables from benghazi, you did not read the cables from ambassador stevens, i would have relieved you of your post. >> you know, i do feel responsible. i feel responsible for the nearly 70,000 people who work for the state department. i take it very seriously. >> reporter: republican ron johnson accused the obama adm administration of konking up the nature of the attack in the weeks following the assault. >> again, we were misled there were supposedly protests and an assault sprang out of that and we learn thad that was not the fact and the american people could have known that within days. >> the fact is we had four dead americans. was it because of a protest or guys out on a walk because they decided to kill americans. what difference at this point

does it make? it's our job to figure out what happen and do everything we can to spreenlt it from ever happening again, senator. >> reporter: clinton focused her tm on her efforts to fix security efforts at state department. she pointed out that while security costs have gone up, congress has refused requests for more money and cut the state department budget. senator john mccain, a critic of the administration's response to the attacks said clinton's answers were unsatisfactory. secretary clinton linked what occurred in mali with what happened in algeria. senator john kerry would be asked. his confirmation hearings begin today at 10:00 a.m. margaret brennan, cbs news, washington. that bitter cold snap is expected to continue into the weekend. more snow in chicago today where the high is expected to hit a

balmy 23 degrees. the frigid arctic air mass brought numbing below zero windchills that forced schools to close and posed transportation problems. and the bitter cold has moved to the northeast. this mountain in new york city froze in the single-didn't temperatures. a slight warmup is expected by the end of the weekend though. it would be beautiful if it wasn't so ugly outside, right? well, coming up in this morning news, stock dive. apple is shaken to the core following disappointing earnings numbers. this is the "cbs morning news." bacon?! gotta get that bacon!

million less than his first inauguration in 2009 which averaged about 38 million people. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple loses some of its shine and a plot twist for netflix. ashley morrison is here in new york with a little more on that. good morning, anally. >> good morning, anne-marie. apple shares tanked on monday. the company missed wall street's forecast for the third straight quarter and shares fell 10% in after hours trading. that's a loss of about $50 bill. the company posted a profit of $13 bill, selling 28% more iphones and 48% more ipads, but that still did not meet analysts' expectations. in asia apple's earnings were overshadowed by news that china's manufacturing rose. tokyo's nikkei gain 1% while hong kong's hang seng shed a frac texas. the dow shot up 67 points to

13,779. that's the highest level since october 2007 before the recession began. netflix wowed wall street with its earnings. it gained 2 million subscribers in the u.s. it helped the company net almost $8 million. it hit a new 52-week high gaining 35%, closing at almost $140. japanese and u.s. investigators said wednesday that overcharged batteries did not cause the recent fires on boeing's 787 dreamliner, but they did find thermal damage to the lithium i on battery. overall, 50 dream leaners have been grounded worldwide. the city wants to ban sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces in

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in new york, partly sunny, a high of 21. miami, much nicer with a high of 76. chicago, snow showers, 20, the high. dallas and los angeles, some sun and clouds, 75 and 68 degrees. well, the family of former all-prolinebacker junior seau filed a lawsuit against the nfl wednesday. they say the violent hits he took to head while playing caused him to commit suicide last may. an autopsy found he suffered from a debilitating brain disease. currently about 2,000 former players are suing the nfl over similar allegations. and notre dame linebacker manti te'o is going on the record about his girlfriend who turned out not to be real. the heisman trophy finalist said he was the victim of a hoax in which he was led to believe that the fictitious woman he thought he was in a relationship with

died. in an interview with katie couric, tay yeo explained why he continued the story after he learned of the hoax. >> katie, put yourgs yours in my situation. my whole world told me she died on december 12th. everybody knew that. this girl i committed myself to died on december 12th. now i get a phone call on december 6th that it's lies and i'm going to be put on national tv two days later and they ask me the same question. you know, what would you do? >> te'o is now in florida preparing for the nfl draft. students at the june vefrts of ma'am lined up early to see them take on the top ranked duke. miami goes on a 25-1 run in first half and duke never recovers. it's miami's first win over a

number one team, 90-63, the final. in the nba it takes the miami heat overtime to beat the raptors. lebron james and dwyane wade combine for 66 points. the heat come back from a 56-point deficit to win. and finally an english soccer player has to deal with the opposing team and one of its ball boys. this happened in a semifinals match last night. it goes out of bounds and the swarty ball boy covers it up to run out the clock. he doesn't give it up until the player kicks him out. swansea would win that game. why hundreds of chimpanzees could be headed to a sanctuary after a life in a laboratory. hmm, we need a new game. ♪ that'll save the day. ♪

washington, d.c., some flurry is, a high of 29. atlanta and st. louis, a little bit of sunshine, 48 and 26. partly sunny in denver as well. 61 the high. seattle, cloudy, 46 the high there. well, medicaler er. has advanced so much that testing animals could become obsolete. in a group advising the national institutes of health says that hundreds of chimps who spent their lives who were poke and prodded should be retired. anna werner visited their home very more than 400 chimpanzees have been retired from research and could be located at a sanctuary. linda brent created it after working with government chimps at laboratory. >> it bothered you. >> sure, sure. that's what spurs people on the do great things, and so i think that's very true for me. >> reporter: the 200-acre sanctuary gives the chimps their

first chance to live outside cages. >> we want to give the chimpanzees opportunities to have like they would if they were in africa. to be able to replicate those kinds of environmentals and behaviors, you have to give them space, you have to give them opportunities, and you have to give them an opportunity to have a lot of social partners. >> reporter: chimpanzees have been used in the u.s. labs since the 1920s. they've been important for the development of vaccines and understanding diseases including hepatitis and aids. but advances in computer and lab technologies make large numbers of chimps unnecessary. just 50 could be kept for the possibility of newe research. >> you have a lot of feelings for your the chimps. what do you want them to have? >> i want them to have the freedom of choice and i thank's something we can give the chimps. >> reporter: the next issue would be the cost.

welcome to wusa9. today is thursday, january 24. can you hear me now? i'm andrea roane. my voice is back. i'm mike hydeck. here's monika samtani. she'll have traffic momentarily and howard and i both decided blue ties today. >> hey, it's a snow day for some. we'll have school closings. we'll tell you about them at the bottom of the screen. >> before we move o we want you to know the federal government is open but if you have an option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled tell work, you -- telework, you have that option. >> it's a tiny bit of snow but it's untreated. we want to get you your forecast on this thursday morning. we have a little snow out there now. this is light snow. it's never really gotten heavy. some burst of moderate snow in a few spots. it will become partly sunny and breezy. this stuff will pull out the next couple of hours.

just a few flurries leftover later. 31 degrees -- 26 to 31 degrees. we want to show you a pretty picture. i love to see your pics. we'll make them on the air. here's a look at the winter weather advisories. east of the blue ridge. this goes till 9:00 this morning through the northern neck, southern maryland and parts of the eastern shore with this area of snow coming through. started late last night. lots of areas light snow still. it will pull away a little bit trying anyway areas to our west. so we'll have this light snow going on for a few more hours. again, this is light stuff but it's cold enough so that it's sticking to anything that has not been treated. you're really at the mercy of your local highway crews. in southern maryland, way down in southern st. mary's county, three inches of very fluffy snow. you see why with temperatures in the teens and low 20s. this is the type of snow, a broom or a leaf blower will get

it out of your way but be careful for a few hours. we have a few slick spots william more on that, we go to timesaver traffic. to you give you some idea and perspective of what it does look like, our kevin king went out a few moments ago and got us this video of downtown silver spring, georgia avenue at route 29. once we get to the video, this is what you will expect to find for the most part where the roads are treated, this is what it looks like. i would say you stay to the center of the road on the major thoroughfares where they're not treated. as howard said it's not about how much snow fell. it's that the places where the roads are not treated, it still be slippery, especially coming out of your neighborhoods. again, this is silver spring, georgia avenue. let's go to our maps. for the most part as i said, the beltway is looking okay. no big issues to report but take a look at this, northbound 95 north of dumfries, we have two accidents north of route 234. at one point only one lane was

getting by. then further north on 395, two issues as well. one at washington boulevard and a stuck truck northbound in the third street tunnel coming off the southeast-southwest freeway. i was able to see the accident. we'll go to our traffic camera. they pulled out to show you the slow traffic. this is 4:30 in the morning because of the earlier accident there. we'll go over to 395 and the 14th street bridge. again, what i wanted to warn you about is once you cross the 14th street bridge, watch out for that stuck truck in the northbound 3rd street tunnel. and we'll wind a live look at route 109. that's a tough one as well. keep your braking distance as well. i'll keep you posted on everything you need to know this morning. >> thanks, monika. today congress will begin debating one of president obama's top legislative priorities, gun control. >> lawmakers plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons in high capacity ammunition clips. susan mcginnis has mo
